fivebyfive began as a project idea in 2015 to perform music by Brooklyn, NY based composer Missy Mazzoli. The flutist of the group, Laura Lentz, heard Mazzoli's ensemble Victoire at the Detroit Institute of the Arts back in 2014 and fell in love with her music. fivebyfive evolved into the present quintet of Laura Lentz (flute), Marcy Bacon (clarinet), Sungmin Shin (electric guitar), Eric Polenik (bass) and Haeyeun Jeun (piano), and is based in Rochester, NY with an active performance and teaching schedule. Missy Mazzoli's work Magic with Everyday Objects for fivebyfive's instrumentation still remains one of the ensemble's favorite pieces to perform.

The quintet fivebyfive is committed to engaging audiences in the collaborative spirit and creativity of modern chamber music through both its performances and educational programs. Season concerts include partnerships with artists from many disciplines, musicians from a variety of genres, local organizations, community groups, schools and businesses. Educational programs aim to deepen student creativity and offer side-by-side performances and other opportunities.

In 2017 the ensemble became a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization.

The quintet has received funding from New Music USA, The Farash Foundation and the Decentralization Grant of New York State for its programs, and actively collaborates with artists across a variety of disciplines, including poets, dancers, visual artists and musicians across the genres.

In 2018-2019, some of these collaborations include:

  • A month-long residency with Rochester based dance company BIODANCE and visual artist Josh Thorson at the Visual Studies Workshop, culminating in a tribute performance to Meredith Monk
  • Rochester's Memorial Art Gallery in an art-music pairing highlighting more modern works in its collection to deepen public understanding
  • Strings for Success's wonderful string students of School 19 in a side-by-side performance featuring the music of Rochester composer Marc Webster
  • Patrick Burke and Emily Pinkerton who will be featured as guest artists in fivebyfive's April 2019 "Sweet Air" concert, performing their Rounder Songs with fivebyfive
