Aria” opened on Sunday to a nearly full audience. This year’s iteration of what’s come to be an annual collaboration between BIODANCE choreographer Missy Pfohl Smith and digital media artist W. Michelle Harris, every bit of the performance was an absolute masterpiece. This year the collaborators were joined by soprano Kearstin Piper Brown and chamber ensemble fivebyfive, as well as several guest dancers.

Rounder Songs is based on public domain songs and legends from Kentucky and West Virginia that tell the stories of several “rounders”: rural drifters who include a gambler, a murderer, and a mill laborer who strikes a deal with the devil.

Funded in part by New Music USA, fivebyfive is commissioning four new works for an exhibition in February 2020 by the renowned stained glass artist JUDITH SCHAECHTER. The exhibition is called THE PATH TO PARADISE - JUDITH SCHAECHTER’S STAINED-GLASS ART.

Composers Edie Hill, Jung Sun Kang, Andrea Mazzariello and Jonathan Russell will visit Rochester during Fall 2019 to take part in the open rehearsals at MAG with fivebyfive.
