Two World Premieres, Audience Participation, Field Recordings of Daily Life at NAZ, Video of Rochester Landmarks, Classical Improv, Inspiration from The Bee Gees, and Magic 8 Balls?!
This is our first concert as Nazareth University’s New Music Ensemble in Residence and to celebrate NAZ becoming one of our “homes” and “musical families” we wanted to explore and challenge those themes on a variety of interesting levels.

Eastman and Nazareth faculty member, Octavio Vazquez, has composed a piece, Out of Many (World Premiere), to celebrate America at 250. Its a celebration of our pluralistic society all coming together for freedom and equality.
Joe Jaxson, Richmond Symphony Composer in Residence, grew up listening to The Bee Gees and Barry White. He also studied classical music. In Home (World Premiere), Jaxson uses Regina Carter’s “Late Night Mood” as inspiration and puts all these influences together in a piece that will be stuck in your head long after the concert has ended.
Percussionist Kristin Shiner McGuire will join fivebyfive for Evan Williams’ Heavy (recorded by fivebyfive) and Joe Jaxson’s Perseverance. Both pieces explore difficult times and relying on others to help you through. At times intense, at times heartfelt, these works give a sense of hope when things may look bleak.
Lead Me Home by Brittany Green (recorded by fivebyfive) is reflective piece that draws material from Thomas Dorsey’s hymn, Precious Lord, Take My Hand. Using non-standard musical notation, musicians ebb and flow, reacting to one another to create a shimmering texture that unfolds like a journey. A video showcasing Rochester Landmarks photographed by Mary Ellen Bertram, Richard Colon, and Quajay Donnell will be featured.
Magic 8 Balls? Yes! In a time when the future is hard to predict, Twenty Answers by Pamela Z leads musicians on a journey whose path is determined by the answers of a Magic 8 Ball. Positive, negative, ambiguous-chances are no two performances are the same.
Nazareth Spaces is a piece not yet composed. When school is back in session, Nazareth students will be submitting field recordings of their daily life on campus. Audio/Visual Artist Marc Webster will coalesce the recordings and manipulate them live as the instrumentalists of fivebyfive interact with the sounds.
Tuning Meditation by Pauline Oliveros is part of a concept called Deep Listening. This piece requires performers to focus on the actions of others to inform their performance. Becoming a musical family with fivebyfive, the audience will become performers turning Wilmot Recital Hall into an ethereal collection of voices.
