Carleton School of Music Residency, February 2024
(Northfield, MN)

I am so grateful for fivebyfive’s extraordinary work with our student composers and their insight into the creative process. My composition students benefited enormously from their patience, their focus, their preparation, and their articulate and incisive feedback. Seeing them in action at a concert of new music, much of it commissioned by the ensemble, was a unique opportunity to see the ultimate result of that level of collaboration and generosity.
-Andrea Mazzariello, Assistant Professor of Music, Carleton College

Crane School of Music Residency, October 2022
(Potsdam, NY)

The opportunity to have my work performed with fivebyfive during their residency programs has been a highlight of my young career! fivebyfive gave my piece …of breath and fire a beautiful premiere at the Crane School of Music followed by three other gorgeous performances at the Eastman School of Music, the DROM in NYC as part of Chamber Music America’s showcase performances, and the SUNY Fredonia’s School of Music.

In a landscape where many ensembles are more interested in the excitement of premieres than in the commitment of second performances, fivebyfive’s effort to program multiple performances of my music, as well as the music of many other living composers, is exceptional. This remarkable commitment is what is needed for new music to find a permanent place in the repertoire.

I am thankful for the privilege to work with a team of musicians who share my motivation of igniting curiosity and joy in their audiences! I look forward to seeing fivebyfive continue to carry out their artistic vision and commitment to support the music not only of leading composers in the field today but also that of early-career composers. I appreciate their work!

Thank you so, so, so much for visiting with us, performing your concert, premiering Amy’s work, giving us a forum to smash glass on the sidewalk, and provide the composition student with an incredible reading session. We can’t thank you all enough for everything and sincerely hope that we can do this again soon.
— Jerod Sommerfeldt, Associate Professor of Electronic Music Composition, Crane School of Music
The weekend of fivebyfive’s amazing performance at SUNY Potsdam’s Crane School of Music, our flute studio was very fortunate to have Laura Lentz work with 3 of our flute students in a masterclass. She put everyone at ease with her smile and good humor. Through her keen musical insights, demonstration, and outstanding communication, she brought each student to the next level.
— Jill Rubio, Flute Professor at Crane School of Music

Eastman School of Music Residency, October 2022
(Rochester, NY)

Thank you so much for your presentation (on grant-writing) today! It’s a lot of fantastic information and you did a fantastic job!
— Blaire Koerner, Assistant Director, Institute of Music Leadership
Thank you so much for the presentation yesterday, I found it to be very helpful! I picked up a lot of very useful information that I think will really help me propel my future projects.
— Uday Singh, student at Eastman School of Music
As a student, seeing fivebyfive in residence at the Eastman School of Music helped contextualize the work of a professionally performing new-music ensemble. Seeing the way a local new-music group organizes, performs, and presents their music made the world of contemporary music much more real for me. In addition, to see an ensemble passionately commissioning and performing the works of my colleagues made me excited to be a composer.
— Logan Barrett, PhD Composition Student, Eastman School of Music
