“Life Through Our Windows”

fivebyfive performs two intimate pieces that explore the fragility in our lives, connecting us through our hopes, sorrows, and dreams.

fivebyfive explores Sophie Stone’s Post Card Sized Pieces as the group dreams of a time when travel will be possible. Join us as we cherish life through our windows and start to dream of walking out our doors.

When performing together over Zoom, sounds and music become fragile as they compete with each other. Post Card Sized Pieces was written for Zoom and captures the fragility and intimacy of lives viewed through small windows. Each performance is directed by the unsuspecting actions of audience members.

Also written specifically for Zoom, Sungmin Shin’s Postlude 2020 is an intimate, quiet and healing reflection of those close to us yet separated. As each instrument takes its turn speaking, a narrative of remembrance unfolds inflecting emotions that greatly outweigh the number of the piece’s notes. This will be its first performance and is dedicated to those who are no longer physically with us.

It Can't Not Be Dance Music: New Music Inspired by the Art of James Welling

George Eastman Museum, fivebyfive, and Marc Webster explore the intersection of art and music in this virtual program inspired by Eastman Museum’s current exhibition James Welling: Choreograph. The project began when fivebyfive commissioned composers to create new music as a reaction to Welling’s photographs. Through physical distancing, the musicians with audio and video engineer Marc Webster created one-of-a-kind music videos for each piece of music. “It Can’t Not Be Dance Music” is the world premiere of three videos featuring the music of Kay He, Kamala Sankaram and Robert Lydecker, and will be followed by a conversation and Q&A with the musicians, composers, and artist James Welling. The program is generously sponsored by RIT and is supported by New Music USA. This project is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.

This event is free and open to the general public.

CHASING MEMORIES IN ‘CHOREOGRAPH’: NEW MUSIC INSPIRED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF JAMES WELLING

Commissioning project in 2020

A project between fivebyfive and The George Eastman Museum, with open rehearsals
and a concert among the photographs (2020)
Funded in part by New Music USA with a Winter 2019 Project Grant

OVERVIEW

Rochester-based quintet fivebyfive is excited to commission three new works for the exhibition “Choreograph” by internationally renowned photographer James Welling which will run July 2020 through December 2020. The exhibition will be held at The George Eastman Museum (Rochester, NY), the world’s oldest museum dedicated to photography. The works will be premiered by fivebyfive (flute, clarinet, electric guitar, bass and piano) in September 2020 during the exhibition.

Photographer James Welling has been questioning the norms of representation since the 1970s, and his practice has influenced an entire generation of artists and photographers. Welling’s latest body of work, “Choreograph”, explores his passion for architecture, dance and the landscape through boldly colored and multi-layered photographs. The George Eastman Museum will be the first museum to exhibit this collection.

As the name “Choreograph” indicates, these photographs draw heavily from Welling’s love of dance. Welling’s interest dates back to 1970 when he saw the Merce Cunningham Dance Company perform while attending the University of Pittsburgh. This exhibition marks his return to dance, albeit in photographic form.

Welling found the temporary nature of dance intriguing, like a memory. In an interview Welling commented, “My work, for myself, is about memory, feeling, touch…a sense of my relationship to the physical world, colors, sensations, photographic emulsions, but all in the service of chasing memories, both very distant and recent.” Adding, “This is the least understood part of my work.”

Eager to explore these ideas and the bold, multi-layered world of Welling’s work, fivebyfive will commission three new pieces by composers Kay He, Robert Lydecker and Kamala Sankaram that will be inspired by the photographs in “Choreograph”. These composers were chosen for their unique multi-discipline voices that we believe will effectively capture and reflect upon the multi-layered world of Mr. Welling’s photographs.

In July 2020 the “Choreograph” exhibition will open. During the Summer of 2020 there will be Open Rehearsals and Preview Performances at the museum, a first of its kind for the institution, with each of the composers and fivebyfive. The new works will be given their premiere in September 2020 among the photographs at the George Eastman Museum (GEM). Further plans include collaborating with live dancers, recording the new works, making a film inspired by the photographs, and touring to other museums where ‘Choreograph’ will be shown.

Concerning process and presentation
Embracing the spirit of accessibility, fivebyfive and GEM propose a large window of time for development. Through open rehearsals and preview performances, audiences will be given the opportunity to connect with the artists, ask questions and experience the work as it evolves. Both fivebyfive and GEM  believe this to be essential to the ultimate understanding of the art and to the development of an engaged audience.

Timeline
June 2020 – delivery of scores and materials to fivebyfive
Summer 2020– open rehearsals / preview performances at GEM
September 2020 – premiere performances of new works at GEM
Late 2020 through May 2021 – subsequent performances of works, audio recordings and film in progress

GLASS WORKS: NEW MUSIC INSPIRED BY THE STAINED-GLASS ARTISTRY OF JUDITH SCHAECHTER Commissioning project in 2019-2020

Commissioning project between fivebyfive and the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG),
with open rehearsals and a premiere concert among the artworks, supported by New Music USA, the Eastman/ArtistShare New Artist Program, and the Decentralization Regrant Program of NYS.

OVERVIEW

Rochester-based quintet fivebyfive commissioned four works for an exhibition of the renowned stained glass artist, Judith Schaechter, held at the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) in February 2020. Schaechter has explored and pushed the limits of the stained-glass medium for over 35 years. Her singular, subversive, and masterful approach has altered the landscape of contemporary American art. She embraces the inherent contradictions of her work, gleefully melding the opposing currents of high and low, beauty and gore, sacred and profane, and transcendence and defeat.

The exhibition explored her magical, ethereal and other-worldly images. Combined with the lush, rich colors and patterns, fivebyfive brought Schaechter’s works to life musically, and commissioned four composers to write pieces inspired by her work.

Composers Edie Hill, Jung Sun Kang, Andrea Mazzariello and Jonathan Russell wrote pieces for a premiere concert that coincided with the exhibition and a visit by the artist in February 2020. These composers were chosen for their unique compositional voices that effectively captured and reflected upon the emotional, color-filled world of Ms. Schaechter’s work. The commissioned works were completed in the Fall of 2019. Following the premiere concert, fivebyfive will included these works on its tour and make a documentary and recording of the project.
